Steve Westly

Steve Westly,

public pension funds, which together invest more than $350 billion. During his four-year term, Mr. Westly spearheaded innovative tax programs that helped close the State’s budget deficit and also led an effort to commit more than $1 billion to clean technology investment.

In the 2008 election cycle Mr. Westly served as a California co-chair and a National Finance Committee member of the Obama for America campaign. He currently serves on the Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board as a representative for the venture capital industry.

Before running for office, Mr. Westly helped guide the online auction company eBay through its period of most rapid growth, serving as the Senior Vice President of Marketing, Business Development, M&A and International. Mr. Westly helped bring eBay to Europe and Asia and developed the marketing and acquisition strategies that paved the path for the firm’s exponential growth.

Mr. Westly began his career in Washington, D.C., where he worked first on Capitol Hill and later in the Office of Conservation and Solar at the U.S. Department of Energy. Mr. Westly returned to California to become special assistant to the President of the California Public Utilities Commission. While there, he published two books on alternative energy and the utilities.

Mr. Westly holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, where he served on the faculty for five years. Mr. Westly and his wife, Anita, run the Westly Foundation, which provides education and health care services for children and underserved communities throughout California.

Erica Weirich

Erica Weirich is the founder and director of Global Health Research Foundation (GHRF), a practicing physician in Los Altos, CA, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Before founding GHRF, Dr. Weirich worked extensively in international health, supporting traditional birth attendants and health visitors through the Aga Khan Health Service in remote northern Pakistan, working to improve the health of the refugee population in London, and working with the Zhordania Institute of Human Reproduction on maternal mortality in the country of Georgia. In 2007, she co-founded the GHRF, coalescing health development and respect for culture with Silicon Valley technology and resources. Using medical and technology assessments, with tools and business strategies for rapid access to outcomes and testing of interventions, GHRF is working to ensure that functioning solutions are made sustainable, scalable, and transferable, with knowledge shared.

Dr. Weirich earned an MA in International Development Policy along with her Medical Degree at Stanford University.

Simon Tan

Simon earned his Master's and Bachelor's degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and has done research for the Berkeley Institute of Design (BiD), the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI), and the Hesperian Foundation. His academic background is in computer science and human-computer interaction.

David Healy

Jun Sun

Dr. Jun Sun is the CTO and co-founder of Netspectrum Inc., a start-up company developing mobile payment solutions based on 2D barcodes. In the first three years, Netspectrum developed the world's first Linux-based SmartSIM product, related Android support, and a SmartSIM application store.

Prior to the founding of Netspectrum, Dr. Sun led and managed various projects in DoCoMo USA Labs, including Terminal Architecture Project and Mobile OS Project. His group implemented the world's first smartphone prototype that runs Linux and Windows Mobile at the same time. He is the main contributor and primary author of the joint white paper, "Open and Secure Terminal Initiative (OSTI)".

Prior to joining DoCoMo USA Labs, Dr. Sun worked for Monta Vista Software during which period he was active and well-known in Linux communities. Dr. Sun also worked for Geoworks where he designed and developed the world's first 32-bit smartphone OS, GEOS-SC, and for Sony US Research Labs where he participated in the development of Sony's proprietary OS, Aperios.

Dr. Sun received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1996.

Joseph Hedges

Joseph Hedges has been with the City of San Jose Office of Economic Development since 1991.

In his position as International Program Manager, he oversees a variety of international programs, including the Foreign Trade Zone, retention and attraction initiatives for international businesses, and manages the city’s relationships with international cities and foreign embassies and consulates.

Most recently, he has worked with the City’s Airport on air service development to increase domestic and international flights at the San Jose International Airport. He has planned and implemented several City economic development missions to Asia, Europe, and Latin America to advance San Jose’s economic interests across the globe.

In his first year on the council, Chu initiated landmark legislation to require citywide green building standards, ban the use of plastic bags, and mandate the installation of automatic heart defibrillators across San Jose. Chu is a member of the City’s Neighborhood Services and Education Committee and the County’s Recycling and Waste Reduction Commission. He is also the liaison to the Airport Commission and the Human Rights Commission. Kansen Chu also served as the Chair of the North San Jose Neighborhoods Planning Taskforce, a Council appointed body formed in July 2007 to address the growth of 32,000 residential units in North San Jose.

Kansen Chu is an active community member, an engineer, an accomplished business leader, a dedicated father and husband who has dedicated his time to strengthening the bonds of community: improving our school system, protecting our youths, and improving the quality of life of our families.

In 2002, Kansen Chu was elected to the Berryessa Union School Board. As a school boardmember, he championed stronger curriculums, better education materials, and improved public access to school board meetings.

Kansen's dedication to our community is reflected in his many community activities and civic services. He served on the Berryessa Union School Board for 5 years, Santa Clara Valley Metro YMCA, Vietnamese Voluntary Foundation, Shin Shin Education Foundation, and Advisory Board of Californians for Justice. Kansen has also served on the Santa Clara County Mental Health Board, Private Industry Council under Job Training Partnership Act, Neighborhood Accountability Board of Berryessa, the KNTV Channel 11 Community Board and Asian Law Alliance. He continues to serve on the board of Vision New America, dedicated to advancing youth involvement in civics and government.

Born in Taiwan, Mr. Chu moved to the United States in 1976. Professionally, Kansen has a Master's in Electrical Engineering from Cal State Northridge, and worked as a Microdiagnostics Microprogrammer at IBM for 18 years. Kansen and Daisy have been married for 30 years and they have two children, Ann and Walt.

He is an expert in distributed systems and network storage technologies, and received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and his B.E. in Electrical Engineering from the Cooper Union.

Dennis Quan

Dennis Quan is Vice President of SmartCloud Infrastructure at IBM, responsible for the technology platform underlying all of IBM's public cloud services. Dennis's involvement in Cloud Computing started in 2007, when his team built IBM's first cloud in collaboration with Google and the National Science Foundation.

He has held numerous technical leadership positions in IBM over the past 14 years, including most recently as lab director of the IBM Tivoli China Development Laboratory in Beijing/Shanghai/Taipei, where he worked extensively with clients in the Greater China region across various industries on Cloud Computing and Integrated Service Management projects. Dennis holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as bachelor's degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry, also from MIT.

Aki earned his MBA from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. While Aki was born and raised in the United States, he has spent 4 years living and working in Japan and communicates with clients in both English and Japanese.

As chief executive officer, Czerny led Atrativa to its current status as the premier Web games provider, powering several major ISPs including Earthlink, UOL (South America's largest ISP), Yahoo!™ Brazil, AOL™ Brazil, MSN™ Brazil, Ibest (Telecom Brazil), Terra Networks (North and South America) and many others. RealNetworks, Inc. acquired Atrativa in 2006.

Czerny also played a key role in Latin America's video game industry between 1992 and 1999 as the co-founder of the Brazilian Video Game Association and Head of Capcom's video game distribution and strategy in the region.

Czerny is currently the Chairman of the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) for Latin America and a Board Member of MEF Global.

In recent years he dedicated his research effort in dynamic entrepreneurial strategy and transformation of Chinese production economy to innovation economy.
